Greenwald: Facebook whistleblower adopted by liberals anxious to control political discourse
Journalist Glenn Greenwald believes the Facebook whistleblower is a tool to stop content that “offends the sensibilities and beliefs of Democratic Party leaders and their liberal supporters.”
In a Substack entry titled “Democrats and the media don’t want to weaken Facebook, just seize its power of censorship,” Greenwald wrote, whistleblower Frances Haugen is adopted by the left as she helps advance the quest for better control over online political discourse.
“Democrats make no secret of their intention to co-opt the power of Silicon Valley to control political discourse and silence their enemies,” Greenwald wrote. “Haugen is just their latest tool to harness for their ploy to use the power of the social media giants to control political discourse in accordance with their own views and interests.”
WHISTLEBLOWER SAYS FACEBOOK IS A “NATIONAL SECURITY ISSUE” OF THE UNITED STATES
Haugen, a former civic project manager for Facebook’s disinformation team who leaked internal company documents to the Wall Street Journal for a series of damning reports against the social media giant, told lawmakers on Tuesday that she thought his former employer was a “national security concern”.
Haugen also claimed that Facebook not only knew that its platform was harming U.S. security interests and the well-being of minors using the platform, but that the site relied on negative interactions to drive engagement.
Greenwald agrees that companies like Facebook and Google are “serious threats,” but noted that platforms like cable news and fashion magazines also spread misinformation, causing body image obsessions in women. young girls and disseminate polarizing political content. He also noted that social media companies had censored information that could have harmed then-candidate Joe Biden and “united to effectively remove” former President Donald Trump from the internet.
Haugen was the media heroine of the day, according to Greenwald, but the freelance journalist doesn’t think the flattery towards her has anything to do with the “real dangers” facing the nation.
SEN. BLACKBURN: DRUG CARTELS AND SEX TRAFFICKING USE FACEBOOK FOR “BAD INTENTION”
“Congress has taken no action to curb the influence of these Silicon Valley giants because Facebook and Google are drowning the establishment wings of both sides with huge sums of money and paying well-connected lobbyists who are friends and former colleagues of key lawmakers to use their DC influence to block reform, “Greenwald wrote.” With the exception of a few pillars, the governing wing of neither party really did to object to this monopoly power as long as it is exercised to advance their own interests. “
Greenwald believes that Facebook’s real political problem is “not that they are too powerful, but that they are not using that power to censor enough Internet content that offends the sensibilities and beliefs of Democratic Party leaders. and their liberal supporters, who now control the White House. , the entire executive branch and the two chambers of Congress. ”
Greenwald noted that Haugen is “guided” by a longtime Obama member and she made it clear that her conflict with Facebook is about her refusal to remove content she considers “hate violence and disinformation.” which coincides with the agenda of the left.
FACEBOOK’S GLOBAL SECURITY OFFICER DEFERS PRACTICES: MOST PEOPLE “FEEL SAFE ON OUR PLATFORM”
“Raising for more online censorship has been a priority for the Democratic Party since it blamed social media platforms … for the 2016 defeat of rightful White House heiress to the throne, Hillary Clinton,” he wrote. This thirst for censorship has become an even more urgent priority for their corporate media allies, because of the same belief that Facebook helped elect Trump, but also because free speech on social media prevents them. to maintain control over the flow of information by allowing ordinary and unaccredited serfs to challenge, question and challenge their decrees or to build up a large audience that they cannot control. “
Greenwald then detailed Democrats who have urged tech giants to censor more political speech in the past and provided a poll indicating Democrats support internet censorship.
“This, and that alone, is the only reason there is so much worship building around worshiping this disgruntled new Facebook employee,” he wrote. “What it provides, above all else, is a telegenic and seemingly informed ‘insider’ face to tell Americans that Facebook is destroying their country and their world by allowing too much content to go uncensored,” by allowing too many conversations between ordinary people. ”
