1929 Harley-Davidson Model J with sidecar is a beautiful piece of Harley history
The model you see here dates from 1929 and was acquired by its current owner in the 2000s. Since then it has undergone a 10 year renovation which was completed around 2010. The process included repainting the body and the frame in green and modification of the motorcycle’s 989cc F-head V-twin.
Redesigned for Sturgis’ competition distribution in 2004, its engine was rated at 9hp when new, and it features an intake-to-exhaust design, Schebler DeLuxe carburetor, and engine control system. “Pipes O ‘Pan” four-tube exhaust.
The Model J features a teardrop-shaped fuel tank, toolbox, and rear rack with a brown leather doctor’s bag that the owner used to store his tools. It is said that before being repainted, the fuel tank, fenders and sidecar underwent hammer and weld work.
But, considering that most of the motorcycle’s restoration work was done over a decade ago, it looks incredibly well-maintained. The 18 inch black painted rims are wrapped in Coker tires that were fitted in the 2000s.
Vintage headlights mounted on either side of a Delco-Remy Klaxon-II horn sits in front of a black handlebar with a twist grip throttle on the right and a mirror on the left. Stopping is via drum brakes at the front and rear, while a spring-loaded front fork manages the suspension.
Separate key switches for ignition and lighting, an ammeter and an ornate reading light are located on the dashboard. There is no speedometer or odometer, and the actual mileage is unknown, but the seller estimates it added 50 miles (80 km) in about six years, so it hasn’t seen much wear and tear. .
As for the sidecar, the retro beauty is equipped with brown vinyl upholstery and armrests, as well as “a mudguard, a hinged access door, a passenger foot chock, a leaf spring suspension and an exterior traffic light”.
